I’m A Celebrity Returns With A Trial-Packed First Show

Grab your sleeping bags, rice and beans because I’m A Celebrity is finally BACK on our TV screens, and the first episode certainly didn’t disappoint.

Producers mixed things up this year, immediately appointing Tony Hadley and Susannah Constantine team leaders and getting them to choose their teams by basically playing a game of ‘Guess Who’ with Ant and Dec.

After meeting their teams for the first time, the celebrities were thrown straight into the deep end and taken to the Tree of Torment for their first challenge.

Inside the old tree trunk was split into five sections, with a string maze running through them all. You know, what you’d usually expect to find inside an old tree.

Celebs had to stick their hands into a section each and guide a key through the string maze and, since this was a trial, they were joined by some snappy, slithering friends too.

Much to everyone’s delight - especially Jorgie Porter, whose critters definitely didn’t make the game easy for her.

Sadly, Tony’s team completed the task in the slowest time, meaning they had to send one teammate (George Shelley) off to the Jungle Waiting Room while they carried on with the trials.

Next up, celebrities were tasked with picking one member from the rival team to skydive. Simple, right?

Wrong. This is I’m A Celebrity, so there was of course a catch - that catch being that Jorgie and Susannah also had to battle to keep their heart rate the lowest during the skydive in order to win.

Susannah’s heart rate unfortunately increased the most, meaning she lost Chris Eubank to the Jungle Waiting Room.

Last but not least, the remaining team members walked to a lake, where they had to unlock an floating platoon to drag it back to the shore, unlock the chest that was on it and ring the bell before the other team. Easy, right?

Wrong again. The keys to the anchors were on buoys, which had to be passed through a heavily-knotted rope before they could be put to use on the platoon.

It was Susannah’s super quick team who came out victorious, meaning they got to head to camp for a hot meal while Tony’s team, along with George and Chris, got to take part in Hell-Evated.

Celebrities were suspended in the air in cages, while Ant and Dec (who definitely weren’t taking any joy from watching celebs get covered in bugs. None at all) spun a wheel with all six names on.

They spun the wheel five times, and whoever’s name it landed on each time got 15,000 or so new friends to join them in their cage - all in the name of winning ten stars and ten meals for the camp.

After befriending the cockroaches and winning all ten stars, they were FINALLY allowed to go to the camp and meet the other team, and so far, it looks pretty chummy in there.

But how long will that last?

I’m A Celebrity continues on ITV at 9pm.
