Idris Elba’s latest movie has bombed at the box office

It’s not something to take pleasure in but every so often movies bomb so hard that they inevitably make headlines.

Idris Elba’s ‘100 Streets’ is one such film. Set in London, the title’s is based upon a hundred streets of the UK’s capital that intertwines three people and their stories.

And it’s not even like the movie has a bad cast either. Elba, famed for his role in ‘The Wire’, has appeared in a host of features like the ‘Thor’ franchise, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Pacific Rim’, and this year’s ‘Zootropolis’. Joining him in ‘100 Strets’ are Gemma Arterton, Tom Cullen, and Franz Drameh, yet the British flick could only muster £245 in its opening weekend, according to HuffPost.

With cinema prices anything from £10-15 a ticket, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that no more than a few dozen people went to see the film.

Not even Idris’s first big-screen sex scene (with Gemma Arterton no less) could entice interest. In fact, Arterton later said it was the “most unsexy thing ever”, which doesn’t really sell it to any potential viewers.

It just goes to show that, despite an actor’s popularity, films can still perform terribly when they’re released - especially when its stars don’t do much promo for it.

It’s not the first of his movies to have underperformed at the box office though. 2015′s ‘Beasts of No Nation’ (which was only released in US cinemas before going to Netflix) took just shy of $91,000 and ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ made just $27 million during its run. While the aforementioned aren’t great figures to dwell over, ‘100 Streets’ marks an obvious all time low for the star.

Despite this latest setback, Elba’s has a pretty strong 18 months; appearing in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Zootropolis’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Finding Dory’, and ‘Star Trek Beyond’.
