Idris Elba Awarded OBE At Buckingham Palace

Idris Elba might not have received the Oscar nomination many felt he deserved for ‘Beasts of No Nation,’ but we’d imagine this comes at least as a small consolation prize.

The 43-year old London born actor was awarded an OBE today by Her Majesty the Queen, for services to drama.

Please, no jokes about whether this means he’s now on Her Majesty’s Secret Service…

Elba was accompanied by his mother to the event, who he remarked on Twitter had been made “very happy” by the event.

Others awarded OBEs today included Blur’s Damon Albarn and footballer Denis Law.

This award is the latest in a long line of professional victories for Elba, who - having been a jobbing actor since the mid-1990s - rose to prominence in 2002 with his role in acclaimed US TV drama ‘The Wire.’

Subsequently he has taken the lead in BBC detective series ‘Luther,’ and starred in many major motion pictures including ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ ‘Prometheus,’ ‘Pacific Rim’ and the ‘Thor’ movies.

He will be seen later this year (under heavy make-up) in ‘Star Trek Beyond,’ and soon starts work on the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower.’
