I tried the viral Free People quilted tote bag & here's why I think it's worth the hype

"I can honestly say it's big enough to tote around my entire house."

The Free People quilted tote bag went viral for a good reason — many people have coined it their "Mary Poppins bag," meaning it fits a ton of stuff. I got this for travel purposes, and I can honestly say it's big enough to tote around my entire house (lol). For me, size is a significant factor because I tend to carry everything I absolutely need and then some. I've had this bag for over a month now and have even used it as a personal item on my most recent flight. If you want to know more about my opinion on this popular tote bag, keep reading!

🛍️ Product reviewed: FP Movement Quilted Carryall

Tested for: Over a month

💵 Price: $68 USD

My rating: 4.5/5 stars

Shopper rating: 4.6/5 stars

🛍️ Reasons to buy: This bag can fit a lot of things, and I mean a lot. It can hold my laptop, iPad, makeup bag, toiletries, spare clothing, books and way more — all at the same time! It expands and is super malleable.

Reasons to avoid: If you prefer a more structured silhouette and interior organization, this bag is not an ideal choice for you.

Right now, this tote is only available in a select amount of colours, but new ones are constantly being added, so check back frequently if these don't catch your eye.

Details, pros & cons

This slouchy bag is perfect for so many different occasions — the gym, work, overnight trips, on vacation and so much more.

It's super cute and trendy, but the selling feature for me is the amount of stuff it can fit — it can seriously hold so much! However — it does get heavy when I load it up.

That's where the shoulder strap comes to the rescue. The fixed length might be con for some, but I find it very comfortable (and I can even wear it crossbody if I need to).

Pros
  • Holds a lot
  • Malleable
  • Expands
  • Long shoulder strap
Cons
  • Small opening
  • Not structured
  • No organization
  • Very little interior pockets

I recognize that some people might not like its unstructured style either, but I personally love it. The quilted fabric makes it squishy and malleable, which made it easy to slide under plane seats while travelling. The only downside to the spacious interior is lack of organization.

I'm happy it has a zip-top closure as opposed to a button, and the smaller exterior pockets were a handy spot for my passport. However, I do find the opening to be small and frustrating at times.

🏆 "This bag is soft and well made. It works cross body which I love! Highly recommend."

One person who claims this to be the best bag ever said, "These bags are even better than I hoped!" They added that "there is so much space inside" and that "the colours are absolutely gorgeous."

"It is super spacious and fits so much stuff!" said another reviewer who uses it as a "sleepover/airport/overnight bag."

Another shopper who owns the bag in three colours said, "It is not only cute[,] but it's comfy," too.

The "only downside is it definitely is not a [cross-body] bag like shown on the model," said one customer.

The verdict

If you love being overly prepared and carrying everything you'll need (and probably won't need) with you, then you will benefit from this bag. It seriously carries the world, and it's comfortable to sling over your shoulder, too. It makes for the perfect travel companion and will slide under seats nicely, thanks to its quilted, flexible design.

However, if you're looking for something with more structure and organization, it's safe to say this isn't for you.
