SINGAPORE - Remember those good old days of playing games in the void deck? Well, that's exactly how I felt at the awesome interactive light installations at this year's i Light Singapore.

From colourful image projections to a musical garden, the 2023 edition of Asia's leading sustainable light festival presents 14 light art installations from 22 talented artists across eight countries.

Centred around the theme of 'A New Wave and inspired by the cool colour blue, i Light Singapore 2023 will feature two new locations at South Beach and Millenia Walk to make the experience even more spectacular.

Here are four interactive light art installations to absolutely have to check out:

1. Résonances

Get ready to travel back in time with interactive light installation Résonances, created by the talented Louis-Philippe Rondeau, a professor at the School of Digital Arts, Animation and Design of Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in Canada.

When you pass through the arch of light in the centre, your image will be magically projected onto an adjacent wall before slowly fading into a white light as if you're through time. This is done via a slit-scan technique and presented as a visual metaphor to represent the passage of time.

I had a blast interacting with the installation and seeing what images I could come up with on screen. This is a fun one to show off your moves to see what unique shapes you can create from your body movement and watch as it evolves across the screen. Résonances is located at the Open Plaza of OUE Bayfront.

2. Trumpet Flowers

Imagine stepping into and being serenaded by a gigantic musical garden inspired by gramophones. Designed by Australian artist studio Amigo & Amigo with a background in sculpture and industrial design, Trumpet Flowers lets you create a beautiful floral symphony by using interactive keys that control light and sound. Super-sized flowers will burst to life with a commissioned musical score by Otis Studio and some of Sydney’s finest jazz musicians.

This one's located at Clifford Square, and it's especially satisfying for those of us with an urge to pressing buttons.

3. Block Party

Ever wondered what it would be like if those familiar public housing blocks in Singapore had a life of their own? In Block Party, these buildings come alive, responding to your movements with a personality of their own. Dance and move around, and watch the buildings bend and twist while magical gardens bloom on the screen

Created by a local multi-disciplinary collective of designers, technologists, engineers and makers called Plug & Play, this interactive installation reminds us of our power to shape our surroundings and make a difference to the world.

You'll find Block Party at the entrance of Marina Bay Link Mall, and is a sure hit with kids and adults alike for it's highly interactive features over a large screen. See how far you can twist and stretch to test the limits of the movements of the public housing blocks on screen!

4. Moooooootion

Here's one for all of us who experienced the confinement of lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moooooootion is an interactive stage that lets you bring colour and music back into your life.

Step onto the platform at the Festival Village of i Light Singapore, GastroBeats, and get ready to move.

It is designed by a new media and multi-disciplinary design studio XD49 (Experience Design 49) and presented by GastroBeats in collaboration with Thailand's Awakening Bangkok.

Located at the Bayfront Event Space, the installation uses cutting-edge audio-visual and interactive technologies to produce unconventional and mind-bending graphics on screen. More energetic and powerful body movements will evoke stronger effects on screen. This installation is perfect for those who love the stage and are looking for their one minute of fame. So, let loose and show off your moves - it's your moment in the spotlight!

i Light Singapore 2023 runs from Thursday (1 June) to 25 June. In line with the festival’s colour theme blue, key buildings and bridges around the Marina Bay precinct will be bathed in blue hue on festival nights to complement the light art installations and evoke a tranquil ambience.

The festival is open from 7.30pm to 11.00pm daily with extended hours until 12.00am on Fridays and Saturdays. Ticketed guided walking tours by Let’s Go Tour Singapore and a Rediscover Marina Bay Walking Tour are also available for public booking. Full details can be found on i Light Singapore's website.
