‘Hummingbird’ Spec About Female Black-Ops Assassin Lands At Fundamental Films; ‘Battlefield 1’ Duo To Helm

EXCLUSIVE: Fundamental Films has come out in front of a competitive field to acquire Hummingbird, an action thriller spec by John McClain that is said to be in the vein of John Wick and Lucy. The pic centers on a female black-ops assassin who discovers she’s more than just a hired gun but an entirely new breed of weapon. Marcus Kryler and Fredrik Akerström, who recently directed the cinematic content for the latest installment of Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 1 video game, have been tapped to helm the pic.

Fundamental’s Mark Gao and Gregory Ouanhon are producing the project with Todd Garner for Broken Road Productions. Fundamental’s Gary Glushon will executive produce with Broken Road’s Jeremy Stein. UTA reps McClain, Kryler and Åkerström and also will rep domestic rights to Hummingbird.

McClain, a UCLA MFA grad and former writers assistant on WGN America’s Underground, was just selected as a 2016 Sundance Story Lab Fellow for his script Marfa. That plot: When autistic teen Tanner Wool goes missing, his alcoholic older brother Campbell begins his own amateur investigation into the boy’s disappearance, suspecting it might be connected to the otherworldly Marfa Lights.

Fundamental is in postproduction on the Ethan Hawke starrer 24 Hours to Live and the Keanu Reeves pic Replicas. Broken Road just wrapped the Netflix comedy True Memoirs of an International Assassin starring Kevin James. It is currently in production on Netflix’s Naked with Marlon Wayans and Regina Hall, and in the works is the Screen Gems horror pic Cadaver with Shay Mitchell and Stana Katic and TAG at New Line with Ed Helms and Tracy Morgan.

McClain is also repped by Madhouse Entertainment. Kryler and Åkerström, who popped on the scene with their 2015 short Reset, additionally are repped by Magnet Management.
