House of the Dragon’s Paddy Considine opens up on “disappointment” about Viserys role

House of the Dragon spoilers follow.

House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine has revealed he harboured some “disappointment” over the role of Viserys Targaryen.

The actor appeared as the King of the Seven Kingdoms in the first season of the fantasy drama, but was killed off during the eighth episode.

In an interview with Variety, Considine revealed that he enjoyed his time on the Game of Thrones spin-off, but was disappointed to only appear in a few episodes.

“Yeah, I was told that [Viserys would die]. That was the first tiny bit of disappointment,” he said. “But then I saw the character arc and his demise, and I thought he was a gift. Sometimes things just come to you at the right moments. I feel like I was ready for him.

“A couple of years earlier, I wouldn’t have played him so well, bizarrely. But I’ve done a big theatre run in the West End and New York. Because I wasn’t trained in acting, I felt like, somehow, I finally done my school and learned something about the craft.

“I learned a sense of freedom. There’s nowhere to hide on stage. Sometimes in characters, I’d hidden in them, instead of express them, if that makes sense,” he continued. “I saw all this conflict in him. I saw all this dignity. Those were really interesting things to play, to be a dignified man in that cutthroat world.”

Considine had previously talked about the scene in which Viserys passed away, with the actor saying he was “in tears” when watching the emotional scene back.

Whilst Considine won’t be appearing in the second season of House of the Dragon, production on the follow-up is now well underway. The new cast members for the next run of episodes include Freddie Fox, Abubakar Salim, Simon Russell Beale and Gayle Rankin.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
