'Hotel Artemis' director Drew Pearce details his work on Quentin Tarantino's 'Star Trek' film (exclusive)
Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie might be the most anticipated of the rebooted franchise but there’s still little known about it.
There are reports that the film will be R-rated, like the rest of Tarantino’s movies, and that it could star the Nu-Trek crew, but the only thing we know for sure is that JJ Abrams is producing the film, Mark L. Smith is the lead writer on it, and a writing team was brought in to work on the script.
Tarantino, Smith and Abrams spent time in a writers’ room with Godzilla vs. Kong’s Lindsey Beer, The Good Place’s Megan Amram and Hotel Artemis writer and director Drew Pearce to brainstorm ideas.
Pearce discussed as much as he could about the experience with Yahoo Movies, without breaking Paramount’s water-tight NDAs.
“Star Trek was just this amazing couple of days. I got a phone call, in fact, it didn’t come through my agents because it was such a secret. Even Tarantino’s agent didn’t know it was happening. So JJ asked if I was free to do a couple of days in a room just thinking about stuff, and I was like what’s the project? And he was like I genuinely can’t tell you, and I said well, I genuinely don’t know. And he said, just trust me.
“So the day before we found out that it was brainstorming with Tarantino, and he’d never done that before because he generates his own stuff. He’s a writer, director like I am but it was just a fantastic couple of days with a brilliant set of brains. Lindsey Beer, who’s a huge up and coming writer, and Megan Amram. Amram is a comedy genius and a very good across-the-board writer as well.”
Paramount chairman Jim Gianopulos said two Star Trek movies are currently in the works but Pearce couldn’t confirm it one of them was the movie he worked on.
“That question is above my pay grade. I don’t know if it definitely happens because I did my two days and that was fun but honestly, even if that movie doesn’t happen I will always have the memory of two-days of Tarantino in a room and we all got given a Star Trek badge, including Tarantino at the end. A genuine crew badge too.”
If it is greenlit, Tarantino’s Star Trek movie will likely be a while in the making as the director is currently working on his ninth original movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is scheduled to be released in August 2019.
