Hot Air Balloonist Creates Amazing Real-Life Balloon From Up

Someone’s a Pixar fan, then.

Hot air balloonist Simon Askey has been showing of this stunning tribute to the movie ‘Up’ – a fully functional hot air balloon just like Carl Fredricksen’s.

Askey, a pilot for manufacturer Cameron Balloons based in Bristol, was showing off his creation at the Canberra Balloon Spectacular in Australia, which wound up yesterday.

The main 84,000 cubic foot balloon – called the Cameron TR-84 – has been adorned with 540 smaller balloons sewn onto its fabric, so that it resembles the huge cluster of helium balloons used in the film to move Carl’s house from its foundations to Paradise Falls (based on Angel Falls in Venezuela).

Speaking to Buzzfeed in Australia, he said: “It was created to support the Disney/Pixar movie, Up. And we’re hoping to send the balloon to Japan later this year.”

Travelling the world in a hot air balloon? It’s just what Carl and Ellie would have wanted.

The movie, directed by 'Inside Out’ Oscar-winner Pete Docter opened the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, to great acclaim.

Following the adventure of widower Carl, voiced by Ed Asner, whose house is under threat of demolition, it remains one of Pixar’s finest achievements, receiving five Oscar nominations.
