'Host': Watch an exclusive new clip from 2020's most terrifying horror film

Watch: A terrifying clip from Rob Savage’s Host

Terrifying new horror film Host is one of the few genuinely good things to have come out of 2020 so far.

Rob Savage’s film was conceived, shot over Zoom, produced, and released while the entire country was under strict instructions to stay at home during the first national lockdown, and it’s genuinely brilliant. It currently enjoys a rare 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is likely to feature in many ‘best of 2020’ year end lists.

It tells the story of a group of friends who – while bored during lockdown – decide their weekly online catch up should be a séance. The film plays entirely in a Zoom window, with the pals joining a medium online who attempts, successfully, to connect them with the spirit world.

Initially picked up by horror streaming platform Shudder, the film will be getting a full theatrical release in December (as long as everything goes according to plan) and we’re thrilled to share a new look at the film.

The exclusive new clip – watch it above – comes from early on in the film and shows one of the first supernatural experiences the group has during their seance.

As Savage explained to Yahoo earlier this year, they started making the film without a fixed script, working with what they had, and keeping all the shocks and twists a secret from their cast to elicit genuine responses from his cast.

“We knew how everyone was going to die, and we knew what the scares were going to be, and we didn’t tell the actors any of it,” the filmmaker told us. “So the first thing we shot was all the stunts and all the scares. We cut those together and we added in sound effects and made them properly scary.”

Since the release of Host, Savage has signed a three-picture deal with Blumhouse, the horror stable behind Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and The Invisible Man. Remember the name, because you heard it here (and everywhere else with good taste) first.

Vertigo Releasing’s Host lands in cinemas and on digital 4 December.
