Hong Kong picks "Mad World" for the Oscars

25 Sep - Wong Chun's directorial effort, "Mad World" has been selected to represent Hong Kong to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the upcoming Academy Awards.

As reported on Mingpao, the movie, which tells the story of a truck driver who cares for his bipolar adult son, stars veteran actor Eric Tsang and Hong Kong star Shawn Yue.

As a project of Hong Kong's First Feature Film Initiative (FFFI), the movie was a hit among critics - winning its stars various awards at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards, the 23rd Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award, and the Grand Prix at the 12th Osaka Asian Film Festival.

Prior to the decision, "Mad World" competed with four other movies that were deemed qualified for the Oscars, including the Wong Kar Wai-produced "See You Tomorrow", and Derek Tsang's "Soul Mate".
