Hollywood Strike Averted, a Relieved Industry Reacts: ‘Thank God … IATSE !!!!’

Hollywood let out a collective sigh of relief Saturday when the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) finally settled on an agreement to narrowly avert an industry-wide strike on Monday.

After the news broke, celebrities took to social media to congratulate IATSE on the tentative deal, which brings an end to months of increasingly heated negotiations.

Among the outpouring of responses, actor Greg Grunberg wrote on Twitter, “NO STRIKE!” to which Henry Winkler replied, “Thank God … IATSE !!!!”

“Without them the movie magic doesn’t exists,” added Eiza Gonzalez. “Congratulations #IATSESolidarity @IATSE asking for basic needs shouldn’t ever feel contrived.”

Yvette Nicole Brown tweeted an emoji of a fist and a heart next to the hashtag “#UnionStrong!”

Patton Oswalt was among the first to weigh in, saying “Good for @IATSE for standing your ground. And don’t forget we got your back anytime you need us #IASolidarity.”

Ethan Embry called the news “fantastic,” adding that “Hopefully IATSE membership is happy with this agreement and we can keep pretending to fall in love while murdering people for all your enjoyment.”

The new agreement will include modest wage increases that are similar to other union contracts and the AMPTP will cover the $400 million deficit in the IATSE Health Plan without raising premiums and other healthcare costs like deductibles and co-pays for dependents. Additionally, the two sides agreed to a mandatory 10 hour minimum turnaround time for workers in-between shoots and 54 hours of rest on the weekends.

Next, IATSE members will be briefed by their local leaders on the full details and language of the tentative agreement early this week, and a ratification vote will then be held.
