HK celebs mourn the death of legendary actor Ng Man Tat
1 Mar – As his passing came as a surprise to family and friends alike, many Hong Kong celebrities recently admitted that they were not prepared at all for the news of Ng Man Tat's death.
As reported on Mingpao, Sandra Ng, who had worked with Ng in various movies in the late '80s and early '90s including "The Lucky Guy" and "Royal Tramp", stated that she was extremely saddened over the loss as it came so sudden.
"When I used to film with him, he was like my mentor, my friend, and a good acting partner. I thank him for everything and will miss him a lot," she said.
Kingdom Yuen, who also starred in various comedy movies with Ng and his frequent collaborator Stephen Chow, expressed, "This is a big loss to the entertainment industry. A big loss to the younger generation, and a big loss to friends. He was always willing to help the younger actors and teach them. Once, I was angry about something and he stayed with me and reminded me again and again to think about the future. Whenever I felt like losing my temper, I will think of how he taught me."
Andy Lau, who starred alongside Ng in "A Moment of Romance" that enabled Ng to win Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, stated, "Brother Tat is gone. There is no more illness, and he is free now, so have a safe journey."
On the other hand, Athena Chu, who worked with Ng in "Fight Back to School" among others, expressed, "He was a great actor worthy of respect. Back then when we worked together, I was still a new actress and we were working overseas. He told me to eat with him at every meal. I really miss him."
Ng Man Tat passed away on 27 February, following his hospitalisation to undergo treatment for liver cancer. The news was confirmed by good friend Tin Kai Man, who revealed that Ng had passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was 70.
