The Hillbillies Have Eyes In New ‘American Horror Story’ Season 6 Teasers

Following the three very short videos released yesterday via Snapchat, the full set of new teasers for the upcoming sixth season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story have been released into the wild frontier. As before, they’re so brief as to completely obfuscate what exactly the season is about, but what they do show suggests that it will be drawing inspiration from American history as well as horror classics like The Hills Have Eyes. You can get a glimpse at what I mean in the video above, which has just convinced me to never, ever visit my relatives in rural Oklahoma at sunset.

The rest of the videos are similarly cryptic and similarly creepy. The sight of someone walking down into what appears to be a dark basement while bloody hands reach out from between the steps to grab their legs; the pitiful sight of someone whose head has been mutilated and stitched up with the Season 6 logo (which makes me wonder if it puts the lotion on or not); an almost too creepy to stand overhead shot of (I think) Lady Gaga, humming to herself while a black centipede crawls across her scalp; a cradle with the world’s creepiest mobile; and a farmhouse on a prairie seen from far off with the Season 6 logo written in chimney smoke. Watch them all below.

Yeah, there’s not a lot there, but it’s been previously stated that the season is set in the present with “echoes” to the past. So I’ll take a stab (not remotely sorry for that pun) and guess that Season 6 is partly inspired by the notorious Bloody Benders family of serial killers. The owners of an inn and general story, the Benders terrorized rural Kansas from 1869–1872, murdering at least 11 unlucky travelers who stayed with them. Little is known about who they were or why they killed however, as they disappeared mysteriously after their crimes were discovered, just ahead of law enforcement and an angry mob who subsequently turned on the Benders’ known associates.

American Horror Story‘s sixth season stars Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Finn Wittrock, Wes Bentley, Matt Bomer, Lady Gaga, Cheyenne Jackson, and Leslie Jordan. It premieres September 14.
