"Hermano Puli" to close Cinemalaya

The Gil Portes epic has been selected as the closing film of the upcoming film festival

21 Jul - The movie "Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli", or "Hermano Puli" for short, has been selected to be the closing film of the upcoming Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

As reported on InterAksyon, the movie, which chronicles the life of the titular character, an early 19th ventury preacher who led a rebellion against the Spaniards, will have its premiere at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines on 13 August.

Directed by Gil Portes and starring Aljur Abrenica in the lead, "Hermano Puli", however, will not be competing at the festival.

The movie will mark the third time Portes participates in the festival. His previous 2010 film, "Two Funerals", won five major awards, while 2013's "Liars" became one of the finalist in the Director's Showcase.

Abrenica, who spoke to the media at a recent press conference for the movie, admitted that he is thankful to Portes for trusting him enough to let him try his hand on the role.

The movie co-stars Louise delos Reyes, Kiko Matos, and Markki Stroem.
