One huge Love Island feature is being axed for the 2022 series

It seems like just yesterday that Liam Reardon and Millie Court were crowned the winners of Love Island 2021. And, yet somehow it's already been months since the pair and all our favourite runners up left the villa, meaning it's about time we started thinking about this year's instalment of Islander antics. Here's everything we know about Love Island 2022.

How will Love Island 2022 be different?

Love Island 2022 is expected to follow much of the same format as in previous years. However, there's one big change on the horizon, as one of the show's regulars features is apparently being axed for the 2022 series.

The change focuses on Love Island's famous food challenges, with each season usually seeing at least one food-themed task popping up (it normally involves contestants passing food into each other's mouths to create a meal). Previous food challenges have made for some pretty bizarre viewing, but it looks like they could be no more.

During a Reddit Q&A on 25th May, executive producer Mike Spencer answered a question asking, "Please can you stop making people spit food into each others mouths [?]". He responded, "We are stepping away from the food challenges as we know them." So, no more mushy roast dinners, then?

He then added, "We have published our duty of care protocols very publicly and we have an incredible welfare team on the series."

As for any other changes, we'll have to wait and see (and thankfully there's not too long to wait!).

Is there a Love Island 2022 trailer?

Not quite just yet - although ITV have dropped a couple of exciting teaser promos. The two animated vids feature the Love Island villa's iconic pool - plus a 2021 throwback moment which fans can't stop laughing about.

The videos might only be a few seconds long, but keep your eyes peeled and you'll spot an animated Millie Court (aka last year's winner) just casually playing her keyboard by the pool. Cast your mind back to 2021 and you'll remember that Millie's piano playing in the talent show generated *all* the memes so, naturally, fans are cracking up about the moment in response to the new teaser. Responding to the promo video on Twitter, one fan tweeted, "Millie on the keyboard has me dead," while another added, "not Millie on the keyboard 💀💀💀." Sorry Millie, but it doesn't look like this joke's going anywhere any time soon. Hands up who's excited to find out what this year's talent contest has in store for us?

When was Love Island 2022 confirmed?

Love Island 2022 has long been on the cards. Show host Laura Whitmore revealed the news that Love Island would be back for its eighth series during the 2021 finale, directing viewers on how they could apply to take part.

Meanwhile, as of spring 2022, the Love Island application form was still live online, with a string of rumoured contestants now pegged to take part.

In January 2022, a report from The Sun claimed applications were being accepted from non-binary contestants this year. An insider commented, "Producers are under more pressure than ever to make this series as woke as possible after it has previously come under criticism for its lack of diversity.

"The move could make the basic rules of the show complicated, as each coupling ceremony separates boys and girls, but they are keen to have a non-binary contestant this year. It’s all about inclusivity and breaking down boundaries."

What is Love Island 2022 being released?

The big news - the biggest news, in fact - is that Love Island 2022 has a confirmed release date, and it's soon. ITV2 recently took to Twitter to confirm that the series would be returning on 6th June at 9pm.

What else do we know about Love Island 2022?

There's lots to get excited about, and not too long to wait! It's expected that show host Laura Whitmore will return to head up the show alongside her husband and show narrator Iain Stirling.

We also know ITV were reportedly eyeing up a new villa, to replace the show's current home in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, north-east of Mallorca. "ITV bosses think this is the right moment to refresh this element of the show, just as they did in series three back in 2017," a source said.

"Love Island moved from a location in Santanyi in southern Majorca, which was its home for series one and two, to the current villa in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, in the north-east. Now they’re considering a range of options, but want to stay on the island which has provided the perfect sunny backdrop for the show."
