'Her' Director Spike Jonze Made a Short Film With Stephen Colbert and Grover

Loneliness. Mysterious doors. Non-human companions. They’re all staples of Spike Jonze’s work, even when he’s doing two-minute films for Stephen Colbert.

The Her and Being John Malkovich director appeared on The Late Show on Monday to promote his new TV channel, Viceland. Jonze has long been the creative director of Vice, the underground magazine-turned-media behemoth, and the filmmaker will play a role in the new cable network. Hopefully he’s got plans to make some of the channel’s programming, because as you can see in the short film above, even a few minutes spent in Jonze’s world is captivating.

The clip, which was shot last week, starts with Colbert waking up alone in the middle of Central Park. He then wanders around New York City, lost and confused and chastised by mean locals… until he meets Grover, who finally escaped Sesame Street and made his way to midtown Manhattan.

Colbert enjoyed the experience — but said during the show that it made him grateful for his day job.

“Every time I shoot outside with a real director with a single camera, that sort of thing, I’m so happy that I work indoors and know where I’m going every day,” he joked. “Someplace where there’s heating and fresh water.”
