Production of the second series of Netflix fantasy series The Witcher has been temporarily scuppered, after Henry Cavill injured his leg while filming.

The British actor is said to have been told to rest by doctors.

According to The Sun, Cavill sustained the injury while on an 'assault course' set, which featured 'swinging axes'.

A source told the paper: “It wasn’t bad enough to need an ambulance but it’s messed up the filming schedule as he can’t walk properly.

“He has to wear heavy armour in the scenes and he just wouldn’t be able to do it with his leg injury.”

Deadline reports that the star sustained the 'minor leg muscle injury' while working at 20ft above the ground and wearing a safety harness.

Filming at Aborfield Studios is reportedly continuing without him, and it's said he will be 'sidelined for a short period of time'.

The making of the series, like so many others, has already been dogged by issues surrounding the coronavirus.

The London production of the second series was halted in March, with new star Kristofer Hivju, of Game of Thrones fame, revealing he had tested positive for COVID-19 just two weeks after joining the cast.

Pre-production resumed in July, and then filming in August, but an outbreak of the virus among crew-members on set in November halted proceedings once more, with cameras only rolling again on 24 November.

The show, adapted from the video game of the same name, has become a huge hit for the streaming studio.

At the beginning of 2020, Netflix said that the show's first season was viewed by over 76 million accounts within its first month of release.

It also announced it would be making an animated spin-off series, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, centring on the mentor of Cavill's character Geralt of Rivia, Vesemir.

A live-action prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is also in the pipeline.
