Heath Ledger's Dad Reveals Poignant Plans For Son's Oscar

The Oscar Heath Ledger won for his role in ‘The Dark Knight’ currently resides in Perth, at the Western Australian Museum.

But Kim Ledger, father of the late star, who died eight years ago from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs aged just 28, has revealed the poignant plans for the Best Supporting Actor gong, which was awarded to his son posthumously in 2009.

It will be handed over to Ledger’s 10-year-old daughter Mathilda - who lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her mother Michelle Williams - once she is old enough.

She’ll also receive all the other memorabilia from her father’s acting career which is part of a 'permanent’ exhibition at the museum, which includes costumes, self-penned scripts, diaries and letters.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, he said: “Michelle is aware the Oscar remains secured with the museum.

“At the end of the day, everything is there for Matilda, and when she can take possession of it, it’s all hers.

“One way or another, we are always in contact with our New York girls.”

Kim added that his is a difficult time for the family, his Oscar coming very soon after the first anniversary of his death.

“Bittersweet is probably the best way I can describe that night,” said 66-year-old Ledger.

“It was only a year and a month since his passing. We hadn’t got our heads around the tragedy of losing him, but at the same time, he was receiving such accolades for what he knew was his best work.

“It was peer recognition that was important to Heath and the Oscar was the epitome of that.”

Ledger won an astonishing 98 awards for his acting over a 10-year career.
