HBO Has Another 'Game of Thrones' Spinoff in the Works

Another spinoff is coming.

HBO is developing a Game of Thrones prequel series, The Tales of Dunk and Egg, based on George R. R. Martin's novellas, Variety reports. Like the source material, the hour-long episodes will likely follow characters Ser Duncan the Tall, AKA "Dunk," and Aegon V Targaryen, AKA "Egg," 90 years before the events depicted on GoT. However, HBO hasn't publicly confirmed the plans yet.

The news arrives almost two years after Thrones ended (to less than favorable reviews), and amidst the production of another GoT spinoff, House of the Dragon. The upcoming series, set to debut in 2022, is also a prequel, this time centering on the famous Targaryen family 300 years before the events seen in the original series. Plans for this show were first announced in 2019, so don't expect Dunk and Egg to move so quickly if it does move forward. With industry-wide delays due to the pandemic, and the time it takes to create that Thrones-level production value (think of those CGI dragons), fans will have to be patient.

HBO reportedly had five spinoff series planned to take off after Game of Thrones's highly-viewed eight seasons. One show, which would have focused on the Age of Heroes and starred Naomi Watts, was greenlit then canceled by the network. It's unclear whether the other projects are still a go.

"Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans," HBO's programming president, Casey Bloys, said in January 2020. "We are all focusing on House of the Dragon.”
