Social media expert Christian Howes tells Yahoo UK that the royal wedding is now the most-talked about non-sport event in social media history.

Wow.

That’s right: today’s wedding has surpassed Donald Trump’s inauguration and the Duke and Duchess’s 2011 nuptials as the most buzzed about online.
Howes tells us that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge‘s 2011 nuptials – which pulled in 3.3 million social media mentions – were the biggest event in social media history until the 2014 World Cup Final, which garnered 32.1 mentions, making it the biggest event ever in terms of social media coverage.
And for Harry and Meghan’s wedding? Howes tells us we’re at 4.6 million social media mentions as we right this, but it’s still rising.
[caption id="attachment_2877117" align="alignnone" width="3500"] The wedding has surpassed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s outfits. “Reverend Curry was a trending topic in itself,” he explains. “He’s the most-talked about individual apart from The Queen.”

Howes explains that the Beckham’s were one of the most-mentioned celebrity couples at the wedding, but not as much as they were as Kate and William’s nuptials.

When asked what he’s found interesting so far, Howes told us: “The volume. It’s probably going to be the most-talked about event in social media history. I was just amazed by how it doubled in 15-20 minutes in the anticipation and leading up to the arrival of Meghan at the church.”

“US gives us about 60 percent of all the traffic on social media, also, The Commonwealth. Australia gave a much bigger share than last time. The was also a big pocket of activity in Dubai, where there’s a lot of expats.”

He also said that the reaction to Meghan’s Givenchy by Clare Waight Geller dress was 78% positive.
