'Hamilton' film arriving on Disney+ in July as release brought forward

The filmed version of acclaimed musical Hamilton is making its way to Disney+ on 3 July for an exclusive launch.

Earlier this year, Disney announced that the film would be hitting cinemas in October 2021 after acquiring the rights, however, it seems in light of the coronavirus it's now being fast-tracked to Disney+.

The play's creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the news, sharing that the choice was made "in light of the world turning upside down", referencing to some of the show's lyrics.

He also tweeted: "It’s only a matter of time...Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+. #Hamilfilm."

The account for Disney+ UK shared: "Surprise! The original Broadway production of Hamilton, filmed LIVE onstage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, is now coming exclusively to @DisneyPlus this July 3rd. Shout it to the rooftops! #Hamilfilm."

Hamilton tells the story of US Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and how he moved on from a poor childhood into power via hip hop and with a racially diverse cast.

The version set for release sees Miranda play the titular Alexander Hamilton, while fellow original cast members Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldberry star as Maquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Angela Schuyler, respectively.

Thomas Kail, the show's director, shot three live performances of Hamilton to bring it to the screen.

Hamilton made its Broadway debut in 2015 and subsequently earned 11 Tony Awards, a Grammy, and a Pulitzer.

It landed in London's West End in 2017 and went on to win seven Olivier Awards.

Recently, the cast reunited to surprise a super fan who wasn’t able to see a live performance after shows were cancelled due to the coronavirus.
