Half of Singapore residents pick Japan for next vacation: survey

SINGAPORE — Some five in 10 Singapore residents are considering Japan for their next vacation, according to a survey released on Wednesday (1 June).

This is followed by 39 per cent for Taiwan and 33 per cent for South Korea, the latest data from UK-based market research company YouGov's DestinationIndex found. New Zealand placed fourth, followed by Australia and Thailand.

More than two in three respondents aged 16 to 24 and almost three in five of those aged 25 to 34 would consider vacationing in Japan for their next overseas trip, compared to around half of those aged 35 to 54.

Meanwhile, adults aged 55 and older are almost half as likely as those aged 16 to 24 to consider holidaying in Japan.

YouGov's Global Travel Profiles also revealed that Singapore residents who are considering visiting Japan are significantly more likely than the average consumer in the city-state to say that travel advertising on social media and travel websites grabs their attention.

The findings were based on four-week moving average data as of Tuesday. In Singapore, 300 to 400 residents aged 18 and above are surveyed over the period.

Last Thursday, Japan announced it will reopen to tourists from 98 countries and regions – including Singapore – starting 10 June, ending a two-year COVID-19 pandemic closure. However, travellers will only be allowed to enter with tour groups.
