As the seasons of Game of Thrones pass, we’ve all grown to love Gwendoline Christie a.k.a Brienne of Tarth. It may have been just one of many nuanced, fully fleshed-out roles on the TV series, but the 38-year-old recognised the potential of the character at once.

Speaking on The Top 10 Game-Changing Game of Thrones Moments, a special on the PEOPLE/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN), Christie says GOT revolutionised the way women are portrayed on TV:

“This was a television show that would put women at the forefront. We were going to explore female characters in a way that conventionally doesn’t happen. [Characters like Sansa, Arya, Daenerys, Cersei and Brienne] wouldn’t simply exist as the mother role, the girlfriend role, the wife role, or the sister. They would be people in their own right. I think putting women to the fore is what has changed the platform for television now.

The show has certainly been good for many of the female actors on the show – Christie has gone on to play Captain Phasma in the Star Wars franchise, while both Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are now a part of the X-Men universe. Emilia Clarke, despite her failed foray on Terminator: Genisys, will also be a part of the Han Solo spinoff movie.

And judging by the record-breaking ratings the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere got, GOT’s popularity hasn’t even reached its peak yet.
