Here’s an intriguing ‘What If’ for Marvel fans, as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ writer-director James Gunn reveals that Bradley Cooper was not the only big name in contention to provide the voice of Rocket Raccoon.

In an Q&A session with fans on Facebook, Gunn revealed that veteran screen star Danny DeVito was among the actors who voice-tested for Rocket in the 2014 Marvel blockbuster which made instant icons of the previously little-known interstellar ensemble.

The matter came up when a fan suggested DeVito could replace Cooper in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ - at which point Gunn revealed this was not the first time the ‘Romancing the Stone’ and ‘Twins’ actor had been considered.

To the suggestion of DeVito replacing Cooper, Gunn replied (quotes via ComicBook.com), “Not gonna happen. In all honesty, Danny DeVito is one of the voices we tried out, but Danny DeVito is an older man now and Rocket is not an older man, he’s a younger man. And Danny DeVito’s voice just wouldn’t work.“

That DeVito was considered at all would seem to further confirm that Gunn is a fan of TV’s ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ in which DeVito stars, as the director previously revealed that the sitcom’s leading man Glenn Howerton was also a contender for the role of Peter Quill/Star Lord, prior to Chris Pratt’s casting.

DeVito is of course no stranger to comic book movies thanks to his role as The Penguin in ‘Batman Returns,’ and he has also done voice work in the likes of ‘The Lorax.’

Not yet in production, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2′ is due in cinemas May 2017.
