Gregory Wong helps at restaurant to fund legal defense
17 Dec – After his public cry for financial help earlier as he prepares for his upcoming trial for his 1 July protest case, Gregory Wong was fortunate to be invited by the former Legislative Council Member Jeremy Tam to help out at his tea restaurant in Mong Kok.
As reported on Mingpao, the actor, who appeared at the said restaurant at about 12pm on 16 December, quickly went to work, organising takeaway bags, greeting the guests, and cleaning up the dining tables. Many fans and customers alike were also welcomed to take photos with him, and even lined up outside the door for the chance to meet the actor.
Speaking to the media about the four-hour appearance, which earned him a five-figure fee, Gregory stated, "Someone approached me within 24 hours after I posted the previous message [on social media]. I knew Jeremy Tam, but was not familiar with him, and we got in contact through an intermediary," he said.
Gregory stated that he is unsure whether he will continue to appear at Tam's restaurant, as he has been approached with various other cooperation projects and would like to try different things. However, he is thankful to the politician for his assistance.
The actor also revealed that there are still many more fans who wanted to help fund his legal defence by donating money, but that he had turned down the offer as he didn't want to take advantage of them.
"I just want to use my effort in earning the money and do what I want as much as I want. I don't want to rely on people's charity," he added.
Gregory will be making his appearance at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on 18 December for his trial. The actor was among the many who were arrested last year for storming of the Legislative Council Complex during the 1 July protest to halt the enactment of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill.
