Goonies 2 ‘probably won’t happen’, says original film’s star

It seems we’re not about to get that long-awaited ‘Goonies’ sequel fans have been craving after all, according to one of its stars.

Original ‘Goonies’ actress Martha Plimpton has dashed everyone’s hopes of that rumoured follow-up we first heard about a couple of years ago when the film’s director Richard Donner said he and Steven Spielberg were developing a sequel.

During a recent AMA on Reddit, Plimpton, who played Stef in the 1985 comedy-adventure, didn’t seem hopefully we’d ever see what happens to our now grown stars. “I can tell you that I really wouldn’t expect it”, she initially responded.

“It’s been teased for decades and I don’t think it’s going to happen. At least, as far as I know. I think [director] Dick Donner, who is a brilliantly funny man, likes to torture us all with the prospect. I believe it’s his revenge for having been tortured by all of us for six months in 1984”.

Couple this with Corey Feldman - he played Mouth - and his vocal opinion on how he didn’t think we’d see another movie, it’s all but expelled any hope of one.

It’s also worth noting that the original film’s director Donner is now 86, so it’s unlikely he’d be able to cope with the physical and mental demands of making a Hollywood movie at his age - not that we’re being ageist; it’s just a heck of a task to undertake!

Donner’s not directed since 2006′s ‘16 Blocks’ which starred Bruce Willis. Prior to that the filmmaker’s noted for helming ‘The Omen’, ‘Superman’ (starring the late Christopher Reeve), and the ‘Lethal Weapon’ franchise.

It seems if, and it’s a bit if, a ‘Goonies 2′ does come about, it’ll be so far down the line that an entirely new director and crew, not to mention young cast, will form. Let’s face it, an adventure movie will probably be more exciting with new, fresh faces rather than catching up with the original cast’s storyline. We’d still like to see some cameos though, and that includes Sloth!
