Golf, gorgeous unblocked views, and authentic Japanese food from S$3.50 at Tend Bistro

Ever wondered what is located on the second level of Punggol Public Golf Range? Well, it’s none other than Tend Bistro— an izakaya bar & cafe. The head chef of Tend Bistro has spent over three decades in Japanese dining— which makes the food served here true to its roots! Besides, I also heard their special “tare” teriyaki sauce is made in-house and perfected after going through many trial rounds.

I live less than ten minutes away from Punggol, so I decided to head over to check out the new-ish bar & cafe. Do note to turn right once you pass the gantry as Tend Bistro is located on the second floor of the range. Alternatively, all you have to do is follow the distinctive sound of a club head hitting the ball, and you know you’re in the right place.

I started off with a plate of Tori Kawa Karaage (S$5) because who can say no to fried chicken skin right? And let me share with you how absolutely tasty it was! Not only was the chicken fried to golden brown perfection, but the Tori Kawa Karaage also had a loud ASMR-worthy crunch with each bite.

I also had the Cheese Maki (S$3.50) and Tomato Maki (S$3.50). Both were exceptional, and personally, Tend Bistro’s Cheese Maki hit all the right spots for me.

I immediately knew I was off to a good start.

Moving on to meat and seafood skewers, I had the Kushiyaki Platter (S$14.50) and Yakitori Platter (S$13). The former comes with an assorted medley of meat and seafood namely: one stick of grilled prawn, one stick of tsukune, one stick of buta bara, one stick of enoki maki, and a stick of yakitori. And the latter, is a platter of five assorted chicken sticks.

Overall, both platters did not disappoint. However, I would’ve loved for them to be charred slightly longer to get the smokey aftertaste. One thing I’d vouch for is that they are the perfect accompaniment for a glass of chilled beer on a hot day.

If you want to chow down on something that will fill the tummy, get the Smoked Duck Goma Soba (S$15). The dish is essentially soba in goma sauce, topped with a generous serving of plump and juicy slices smoked duck. The creamy and nutty sauce paired perfectly well with the smoked duck, and gave off a strong sesame oil aftertaste. Truly a dish for anyone who loves duck and goma soba.

Not a noodle person? Fret not. Like any Japanese establishment, they have rice bowls! I had the Gyu Don (S$14) and let me share something with you guys, the chefs at Tend Bistro really know what they’re doing with their meat. The beef was soft and buttery, and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture. However, the rice was a tad bit too chewy for my liking. Again, if you’re looking for a dish to fill you up, the Gyu Don does the trick.

Apart from food, Tend Bistro also have alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to quench your thirst.

For beers, expect to find Kirin Ichiban (S$11 for a pint) and Guinness Draught (S$12 for a pint) on tap amid other favourites like Heineken (S$10 per 325ml bottle, S$40 for a bucket of five), Carlsberg Smooth (S$35 for a bucket of five, and Asahi (S$25 for a bucket of eight mini cans). Tend Bistro also has whiskies, Hendrick’s Gin, Martell, wine, sakeshochu, and the usual coffee and tea.
