Godzilla vs Kong ending spoilers follow.

It's finally here and we'll finally know the answer to which titan is the most powerful: Godzilla or King Kong.

Godzilla vs Kong is available to rent at home now in the UK and is also out in the US in cinemas (remember those?) and HBO Max. The epic movie sees Godzilla and Kong put on a collision course by unseen forces, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Unlike 1962's King Kong vs Godzilla, there is a genuine winner in Godzilla vs Kong – as promised by director Adam Wingard – but not everything is as straightforward as it seems in the battle of the titans.

We're about to go into some major spoilers to discuss the ending of Godzilla vs Kong and what that other titan is playing at. Look away now if you haven't seen the movie yet and come back once you have.

Godzilla vs Kong ending explained: Who wins Godzilla vs Kong?

Early on in Godzilla vs Kong, Godzilla attacks a facility of Apex Cybernetics for what appears to be no reason whatsoever.

Shady Apex CEO Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir) uses the attack as an excuse to recruit former Monarch scientist Dr Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård). Simmons thinks the Hollow Earth – the birthplace of all titans – has a power source that can create a weapon to defeat Godzilla.

Lind used to work with Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), the protector of Kong, and Apex want Kong to help show them the way to Hollow Earth. They believe that Kong would want to go home, rather than stay in the containment facility on Skull Island.

Andrews agrees to help and, along with Apex executive Maya (Eiza González) and Andrews's adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle) who has a connection with Kong, they set off to the Hollow Earth entry point in Antarctica.

Godzilla senses old rival Kong (their ancestors fought in an old war, you see) is out in the world and attacks the convoy heading to Antarctica. Godzilla almost drowns Kong, but Kong is saved when the ships turn off their power, making Godzilla think they've surrendered. Round One goes to Godzilla.

While all this is going on, Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) is convinced that something is making Godzilla attack. Together with conspiracy theorist podcaster Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry) and her friend Josh (Julian Dennison), they infiltrate the destroyed Apex facility.

During the attack, Bernie – who was working undercover – thought he saw something that looked like the ORCA, a device that controlled the titans in King of the Monsters. It's missing though and all they find are Skullcrawler eggs which are being sent to Hong Kong. The trio unwittingly find themselves going to Hong Kong with the eggs.

Surprise, it turns out that Apex are up to no good and when they arrive in Hong Kong, the trio find themselves in a "sacrifice pit". The Skullcrawlers are just bait for Apex to test out the Mechagodzilla they've built, which is controlled by a pilot (like the Jaegers in Pacific Rim, basically).

Apex need the power source from the Hollow Earth to make Mechagodzilla work, and Godzilla attacked Apex because of the threat it poses.

Having airlifted Kong to Antarctica to avoid another Godzilla attack, Kong leads the way into the Hollow Earth and they discover an ecosystem similar to Skull Island. Kong finds the ancestral throne room where Kong acquires a nifty axe made out of one of a former Godzilla's dorsal plates.

Kong recharges the axe with the power source, but Maya just uses this as an opportunity to steal a sample of the power and send it back to Apex in Hong Kong. Godzilla is about to attack Apex in Hong Kong, but senses this power awakening and attacks the Hollow Earth from the Earth's surface with atomic breath.

In the carnage that follows, Maya and the rest of the Apex team are killed (sorry, not sorry), but Lind, Andrews and her daughter make it safely to the surface.

Kong heads to the surface with them and battles again with Godzilla, but this time Kong has the advantage of his supercharged axe. Turns out the axe can absorb Godzilla's atomic breath and Kong knocks Godzilla out. Round Two goes to Kong.

Godzilla is a hard bastard though and gets up for another round instantly. Without the axe charged up and a bit knackered from the previous bout, Godzilla overpowers Kong and pins Kong to the ground, but Godzilla relents before killing Kong.

Round Three – and the ultimate battle – goes to Godzilla.

Godzilla vs Kong ending explained: Who is Mechagodzilla?

That's not the end of the titan battles, though.

With Apex now in possession of the power source from the Hollow Earth, they manage to fully charge Mechagodzilla believing they can control their robot through a psionic link with the pilot, Ren Serizawa (Shun Oguri) – the son of late Monarch scientist Ishirō Serizawa.

This link is achieved by using two skulls from King Ghidorah who Godzilla defeated in King of the Monsters. One skull is in Mechagodzilla and one skull is in Apex's lab, making Mechagodzilla a "living supercomputer... capable of intuitive learning".

Unsurprisingly, that goes as well as can be expected and shortly after Mechagodzilla is awoken, the system becomes unstable, killing Ren. Mechagodzilla breaks out, killing Simmons in the process, and goes to battle with Godzilla.

(Don't worry, Madison, Bernie and Josh all manage to survive.)

Even Godzilla can't compete against Mechagodzilla after his titanic tussles with Kong and is on the verge of defeat. Kong is revived by Lind using blowing up one of Apex's crafts on Kong's chest as a titan defibrillator, and enters to battle against the robotic titan after Jia persuades Kong (through sign language) that Godzilla is not an enemy.

Mechagodzilla still has more than enough for the two weary titans though until Josh short-circuits its controls, stalling Mechagodzilla. Godzilla charges up Kong's axe with atomic breath and Kong destroys Mechagodzilla by ripping its head off.

With the world saved from potential Mechagodzilla destruction, Godzilla heads back into the ocean and Kong is later seen ruling over his new home in the Hollow Earth.

Phew.

Godzilla vs Kong is available to rent at home in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes and other participating digital retailers, while it is available to watch now in US cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
