Godzilla Sequel Loses Director Gareth Edwards

Having successfully brought the King of the Monsters back to the big screen in the 2014 reboot, it seems director Gareth Edwards’s ‘Godzilla’ journey ends here.

Deadline reports that Edwards has stepped down from the planned ‘Godzilla’ follow-up, in what is said to be an “amicable” split between the director, production house Legendary and studio Warner Bros.

Reportedly, as Edwards went straight from ‘Godzilla’ into the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Rogue One,’ the director is keen to take a break from blockbusters in favour of some smaller, more personal projects (perhaps along the lines of his 2011 low-budget debut ‘Monsters’).

It is also reported that Edwards’s exit from ‘Godzilla 2′ is not related to the recent release date change; the sequel is now scheduled to open 22 March 2019, with hotly anticipated crossover movie ‘Kong Vs Godzilla’ due the following May.

No new director for ‘Godzilla 2′ has yet been named, but Max Borenstein, writer of the 2014 movie, will also pen the sequel.

Legendary’s fledgling monster universe expands next year with ‘Kong: Skull Island.’ Meanwhile, Edwards’ ‘Star War: Rogue One’ opens 16 December.
