Gisele Bundchen is celebrating her 40th birthday by planting 40,000 trees.
The model, who is known for her long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, announced over the weekend that she has decided to plant 40,000 trees in the Amazon rainforest to mark her milestone birthday on Monday.
"I feel like a whole new chapter of my life is starting, and I wanted to celebrate it in a meaningful way, so I decided to plant 40,000 trees. I have been planting trees for different projects for years, as I feel that this is the best way I know to give back to Mother Earth," she wrote on Instagram besides a slideshow of snaps showing her and her family planting trees. "This year, to celebrate my birthday, my family and I had planned to plant trees in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil but, as we all know, that is not possible right now. Then I had another thought! What if I could come up with a way for others to help me plant trees there?"
The Brazilian model has set up a website so her family, friends, and fans can donate trees as part of her birthday initiative. She tops the donor ranking list on the site, having donated 40,000 trees, and she is followed by her husband Tom Brady, the father of her children Benjamin, 10, and Vivian, seven, who has donated the same amount.
In a second post, Gisele shared throwback photos showing her visiting an Indigenous tribe in the Amazon rainforest in 2004. In the caption, she explained that she called officials at non-profit organisation Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) about her tree-planting drive and they revealed a project she supported back in 2006 has created a prosperous "seed bank".
"It has made me so happy to know that the little seeds we planted so many years ago have developed into so much life. Today we are going to use this same seed bank to plant 40,000 trees for my birthday-and continue to regenerate nature," she wrote.
