Giovanna Fletcher says she was 'selfish' for crying over unplanned pregnancy

Giovanna Fletcher, 33, has highlighted an important truth about unplanned pregnancy in her latest Instagram post.

The British author and mother of three, who is married to McFly’s Tom Fletcher, gave birth to her third child, son Max Mario Fletcher, in August 2018.

Taking to Instagram, Giovanna revealed to her 1.1 million followers how she cried and experienced feelings of ‘selfishness’ and ‘guilt’ after learning she was pregnant with her third child.

On the 3rd January last year I found out I was expecting this little one. It was quite a shock. We always knew we wanted another child, but I think we both thought it would be in a year or two. I’ll be totally honest, I finally felt I was getting ‘me’ back and into the groove of mothering two boys while juggling work commitments. I had loads of plans in the diary and the thought of cancelling some of them and adapting others to accommodate my growing bump was overwhelming. I cried. Cried because it was so unexpected, cried out of selfishness and then guilt. I remember scrolling through Instagram that night and reading a post from a mother who had lost her child. That was the slap across the face I needed. I was incredibly lucky to be pregnant again – and so easily – after miscarrying before Buzz and then having difficulty getting pregnant with him. That feeling of ‘luck’ stayed with me throughout my pregnancy, although it made me feel sick with worry. I felt so lucky, and in a weird way worried I was ‘pushing my luck’ to expect another child to enter the world happy and healthy. I felt that way until the moment he was placed in my arms. I’m so utterly thankful to this little man and all he has taught me already. He is sunshine in all its glory. I’m lucky and grateful. Thank you Max! Xxxx

In the candid post, the mum-of-three admits to feeling a ‘slap across the face’ as she learnt of another mother’s miscarriage, an experience Giovanna has personally gone through in the past.

Followers weighed in to share their own accounts of having children after miscarriage and stillbirths.

“He is a total blessing, I managed to have one healthy boy who is about to turn 6! Had 4 miscarriages and one failed IVF after so sadly we had to stop at just one child but I’m so grateful to have him.”

“It makes me so happy that you are open and honest about these things. My little boy is 5 and I had a miscarriage in march last year. Completely broke my soul. 6 months later I fell pregnant again and now I am near 4 months pregnant completely worrying about everything but so thankful at the same time. Thank you for making me feel like I’m not alone.”

“As a mummy who has lost her son (my son was stillborn in 2015) and as a mother to two beautiful healthy girls it’s ok to feel how you have. don’t ever feel guilty. There are times when even I should be more grateful for what I have and I’ve been through the heartbreak. he is absolutely gorgeous.”

Last September, a mum-of-six’s Twitter post went viral after she blamed men for all unplanned pregnancies.

“If you want to stop abortion, you need to prevent unwanted pregnancies,” she wrote. “And men are 100% responsible for unwanted pregnancies. No for real, they are.”
