'Gilmore Girls' Boss Hopes Fans Don't Spoil the 'Last Four Words': 'It's Going to Mean a Lot Less'
Much has been made about the last four words in Gilmore Girls lore. With Netflix releasing all four chapters of the new series simultaneously on Nov. 25, Amy Sherman-Palladino is hoping fans don't skip to the final scene without watching the previous installments first.
"It would be great if people who only wanted to see the last four words first got some therapy before it actually aired and got rid of that inclination because it really is a journey leading up to the last four words and it's going to mean a lot more if you've taken the journey," Sherman-Palladino said during Wednesday's summer Television Press Association press tour session. "It's going to mean a lot less if you just flip to the last page. That being said, what can I do?"
The Gilmore Girls co-creator was vocal about Netflix's decision to debut the entire season at once, showing her disappointment in the move.
"I told them that I was going to hang myself from a shower curtain if they put them all out and they said, 'Wow, OK, well, we have really nice shower curtains here, so...,'" Sherman-Palladino said in her dry humor.
"Look, it was my hope to put them out separate because I am a thousand [years old] and I enjoy seeing it, walking away, having some coffee, [eating] a sandwich," she continued. "It's such a journey and because it's such a build to the last four words and because I know that we live in an age where people are going to go right to the last four words and then put them on the Internet and possibly spoil it for people who are wanting to take that journey. You don't always get what you want." Nonetheless, Sherman-Palladino seemed to accept the fact that viewing habits have changed in a digital era, adding, "But the good outweighs the bad and this is a wonderful place to be able to create things and do things in a different way so the shower curtain will wait."
Because the final chapter is set in the fall, the question was raised about whether this was it for the Gilmore Girls story, Sherman-Palladino skirted around the question.
"This is what it is right now," she said. "We put these together. We told these stories. And now we throw this out to the universe."
On Wednesday, Netflix released a new trailer, featuring a new scene with Lorelai and Rory Gilmore as they name-dropped Amy Schumer, as well as the opening two minutes of the first chapter featuring the Gilmores' anticipated reunion.
Gilmore Girls: A Day in the Life premieres Nov. 25 on Netflix.
