On 24 May 2022, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) revealed that Gillman Barracks will receive a S$2 million makeover that plans to breathe new life to the entire area in two phases.
SLA will upgrade the area’s infrastructure which includes building a new playground that will be a hit for families with little ones, additional covered walkways, and the upgrading of common washrooms with eco-friendly sanitary fittings. This is targeted to be completed by early 2023.
What we’re more excited about is the bringing in of farm-to-table restaurants, bistros and believe it or not… a farmer’s market! Now that’s something I’m looking forward to.
For a small country like Singapore, we are considered to be an urban metropolis. You’d be pleasantly surprised at the number of farms that are available on our island. Below are some of them to be named.
Ah Hua Kelong— established in 2014, they are a major player in supplying fresh locally farmed fish and seafood to several food establishments in Singapore.
Chew’s Agriculture— the company runs one of Singapore’s most trusted egg farms, supplying our city with over 180 million eggs a year.
Bollywood Farms— headed by Ivy Singh-Lim and her husband, they produce locally grown vegetables of high quality.
Besides being the home for 10 local and international art galleries, Gillman Barracks also has several food and beverage establishments in the area currently. They include Masons, Handlebar, BurgerLabo, Naked Finn, Hopscotch and Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee.
I am beyond excited about the upcoming changes to Gillman Barracks, especially the farmer’s market. Can’t wait!
