The River Safari’s giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia celebrated their birthdays on Friday (14 September) with bamboo cakes.

Male panda Kai Kai turned 11 on Friday while female panda Jia Jia turned 10 last Monday (3 September), said Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) in a media release.

The two pandas each enjoyed a 1.2m tall bamboo cake weighing 17kg, topped with apples and carrots.

“Kai Kai and Jia Jia love getting treats, and we love spoiling them!” said River Safari’s assistant curator Halim Ali.

“I’ve cared for the duo since they arrived in Singapore six years ago. They are like family to the team of keepers,” he added.

It was concluded earlier this week that an artificial insemination attempt between the two pandas to produce babies was unsuccessful, according to WRS.

The attempt came after the pandas’ multiple efforts at natural mating turned out to be unsuccessful as well, despite reaching mating age in 2015.

Kai Kai and Jia Jia, who are on loan from China for 10 years, arrived in Singapore in 2012.
