Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Carrie Coon has opened up about the upcoming sequel to the 1984 sci-fi comedy and its 1989 follow-up, calling the blockbuster a “love letter to the franchise.”

Coon, who is playing the single mother to Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, made this declaration to Indiewire, even comparing co-writer and director Jason Reitman’s work on the film to his father Ivan Reitman’s writing and direction on the originals.

“I think the original script was really innovative. I don’t think anybody had seen anything quite like it before. It sort of launched a genre; there’s this comic sci-fi genre. Really, it was one of the first of its kind,” she explained. “Now we’ve had so many of those films. I think what’s remarkable that Jason has done is… a real love letter to the franchise.”

Coon obviously didn’t go into too much detail about Afterlife, but did insist that the “family” movie will provide the perfect remedy for the current social and political upheaval.

“It’s really a family story. It’s still very funny and I just feel like it’s very warm in a way that we, perhaps, need right now. It’s a real balm for the soul. I think that will actually surprise people. I think it’s for everyone. People will be grateful for the escape that it’s going to offer from the world.”

As well as Coon, Wolfhard, and Grace, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will star Paul Rudd, Tracy Letts, and Bokeem Woodbine, while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts will reprise their iconic characters, too.

We’ll get to see them all in action when Ghostbusters: Afterlife is released on July 10, 2020.
