“We are getting kicked out”: Orh Gao Taproom reveals Sep closure in angry Instagram post

“We are getting kicked out.”

These bold words on Orh Gao Taproom‘s latest Instagram post caught my eye during yet another mindless social media scroll. The post featured a black-and-white reel showing a man clobbering another, with the word ‘landlord’ superimposed on the latter. Interest piqued, I read on.

“Landlords have won again,” the post’s caption read. The popular craft beer biz alleged that they had been misled under the impression that their lease would be renewed. They explained, on the contrary, that they were ‘getting kicked out’ of their space in Serene Centre at Botanic Gardens to reportedly make way for a premium grocer.

Of course, they didn’t forget to express gratitude towards their loyal customers, whom they affectionately addressed as ‘酒鬼s’ — meaning ‘drunkards’ in Mandarin.

While they did not specify a date for their upcoming closure, they concluded the caption with an ‘invitation’ to their final party on 27-29 Sep 2024. It seems, then, that we can expect Orh Gao to close its doors by end-Sep.

For the uninitiated, Orh Gao Taproom operates as a dual concept. By day, it’s a good old Killiney Kopitiam serving up comforting Singaporean breakfast classics like kopi and kaya toast. The evening is when the fun starts, though — it eases into its taproom element at 4pm and dazzles customers through the night with its extensive range of craft beers and delicious Asian-style grub.

Since its 2019 opening, Orh Gao has cemented itself as a go-to for craft beer and alcohol enthusiasts alike. And clearly so; their closure announcement received a significant number of disgruntled reactions on Instagram. The comments section of the post saw an influx of humorous, snarky takes from dismayed followers.

“I hope the landlord every time put on socks always will senget a little,” read one of the many comments, “then sleep that time the pillow on both sides always warm.” Several offered to fight the landlords on Orh Gao’s behalf, while many chimed in with “noooooo” comments.

I know, it’s sad that Orh Gao Taproom’s time with us was cut a little short. Nonetheless, you’ve got a few months to head down for a last hurrah before they bow out of the bar scene (hopefully just for now).
