Germany chooses 'Toni Erdmann' as Oscar foreign language entry

Germany has selected "Toni Erdmann" as its entry into the Academy Awards' foreign language category in 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The comedy about the relationship between a career woman and her father has been a hit at cinema festivals this year, recently becoming one of the best reviewed films at the Cannes Film Festival.

Choosing the comedy breaks from tradition, where a majority of Germany's foreign language entries have been period dramas -- including the three German films that won an Oscar in the category.

A shortlist of the foreign language nominees will be announced on January 17, 2017, with the final five nominees announced on January 24, 2017. The 2017 Oscar awards will be held on February 26.
