In 1998, we were collectively traumatized when Ginger Spice, the Union Jack-clad girl power goddess, left the Spice Girls.

While the pop queens continued on as a foursome, our sense of trust and unending friendship was irreversibly shook when Geri Halliwell (now Horner) embarked on a solo career.

Of course, with multiple reunions since then — including the newly formed group, GEM, consisting of Geri, Emma Bunton, and Melanie B — we know that the legendary ’90s girl group meant it when they said viva forever.

Their Instagram reunions are life-giving.

But what happened in 1998 that motivated Ginger Spice to walk away from the iconic group during the Spiceworld World Tour? Geri appeared on Oprah’s Where Are They Now? last Saturday, and she got real.

She bluntly stated, “It was quite immature, looking back.” We can certainly recall the unbelievable amount of fame that the young women were experiencing, and for Geri, it became overwhelming: “There was a moment I decided to leave the band… I felt like it [had] grown into this huge monster, bigger than the individuals, bigger than the band itself.”

“Obviously there was bit of ruction in the band and I was like, ‘I just don’t want to do this anymore,’… It was like, ‘You’re getting on my nerves and I don’t know how to talk this through, so I’m out of here.'”

That is certainly an understandable reaction, even if Geri wishes she had handled the pressures differently. The most important thing is that she funneled her emotional turmoil into a solo career, gifting us with the album, Schizophrenic, and its single, “Look At Me.”

And above all else, the queens of our childhoods will be spicing up our lives forever. Our hearts were once broken, but they have healed.
