Georgina Wilson slammed for "cultural appropriation"

The actress was criticised for her Red Star cap and skimpy cheongsam while on holiday in China

28 Jul - Georgina Wilson has recently faced backlash from Netizens for her decision to wear a communist cap during a trip in China.

As reported on Rappler, in a now-deleted photo the actress, sister Jessica, and cousin Martin Cajucom wore the five-pointed Red Star caps and posed in front of the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, known for the past massacre of hundreds of civilians fighting for democracy.

She captioned it, "Please forgive the inappropriate [merchandise] that we acquired from a vendor at Tiananmen Square."

She also shared another photo of her and Martine in skimpy cheongsams, and wrote, "Yup, we were those people in chongsams that got lots of weird looks the whole weekend". Martine responded in a comment, "[Oh my God], we are the worst tourists."

Netizens, who saw the photos, criticised Wilson, saying that they are being disrespectful.

"Cultural appropriation is not funny," said one netizen.

"You guys are the worst tourists proudly boasting cultural appropriation," said another.

Others slammed the actress for deleting the photo instead of posting an apology.

On the other hand, fans defended the actress, saying that it shouldn't be a cultural issue since the caps and cheongsams were sold by the Chinese people around the area.

The actress has yet to respond to the backlash.
