George Clooney has spoken out in defence of friend Meghan Markle, saying she has been “pursued and vilified.”

The actor, 57, has compared the treatment of the Duchess of Sussex to Princess Diana and how “frustrating” it is.

According to Australia’s Who magazine, George told a press panel for his new ‘Catch-22’ series: “I do want to say, they’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified.

“She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and its history repeating itself.

“We’ve seen how that ends. I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that.”

His comments come after Meghan’s father Thomas Markle shared excerpts from a personal letter, in which the Duchess criticised him for his behaviour.

George and his barrister wife, Amal Clooney, 41, attended Meghan and Harry’s wedding in May last year.

The Ocean’s 11 star reportedly met Harry at a charity event a couple of years ago and he also has other royal links. Princess Eugenie’s now-husband Jack Brooksbank works for the tequila company George co-founded, Casamigos.

Amal and Meghan are said to have been introduced by a mutual friend and the human rights lawyer is said to have helped the actress settle into London life.

During the press panel, George was also asked if he’ll be a godfather to the royal couple’s baby, when he or she arrives this spring.

Oh yes, I’ll be the godfather of the royals apparently,” he said before laughing and confirming, “No!”

He added: “I’m the father of twins, I have enough sh– to deal with – literally!”

Amal gave birth to the couple’s twins Alexander and Ella in June 2017.
