Ed Sheeran might have made headlines around the world when it was announced that he would have a cameo role in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, but someone forgot to tell the stars of Game of Thrones.

Gemma Whelan and Pilou Asbaek – who play Yara and Euron Greyjoy in the hit HBO series – recently sat down with Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore to talk about season seven of the show, and were caught by surprise when asked about the singer’s cameo.

Asbaek asked bewilderedly, “Is he in this season?”

“I’ve not heard anything about it! Is he [really gonna be in this season]?” Whelan exclaimed in surprise, before asking several times again if Sheeran was really going to be in the show.

She continued, “This is not acting [referring to her surprise when told about Sheeran’s cameo]… No, I have no idea, no idea about that at all!”

Similarly, Sophie Turner – who plays Sansa Stark in the show – said she didn’t know about Sheeran’s appearance until after the scene had been shot, despite her close friendship with Maisie Williams, a self-confessed super fan of the singer.

The singer-songwriter’s cameo was reportedly meant to be a “gift” and a “surprise” for Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the series.

Turner said, “I have no details, I have no idea [about Sheeran’s role]. I didn’t even know this was happening until a couple of months ago, after he shot it!”

“But I heard it was great,” she added with a laugh.

Sheeran previously shared details about his character in an interview with The Hits Radio, stating that he has a short scene in which he sings for Arya, who commends the song.

The singer has also stated that he’s open to sexual actions on the show, and confirmed that his character will not die.

This will not be the first time that Game of Thrones has invited musicians to play cameo roles in the show. Indie rock band Signor Ros, metal band Mastadon and Coldplay’s drummer Will Champion have all previously made guest appearances in the series.

GAME OF THRONES Season 7 premieres same time as the U.S. on July 17 at 9am, exclusively on HBO (StarHub TV Ch 601), with a same day primetime encore at 9pm. Also available on HBO On Demand (StarHub Ch 602) and HBO on StarHub Go.
