Game of Thrones returns to record-breaking ratings

If the moans and screams and shrieks of your fellow geeks haven’t made it clear enough, A LOT of people have been waiting for Game of Thrones to return. In fact, the season 7 premiere saw the medieval fantasy epic’s biggest overnight audience ever.

According to Entertainment Weekly, an incredible 16.1 million viewers tuned in for “Dragonstone”, the first episode of the seventh season, across all HBO platforms (including repeats and streaming and DVR). This represents a 50 percent increase from the season 6 opener, despite airing in the summer for the first time, when fewer households are watching television.

Furthermore, “Dragonstone” currently has GOT‘s first 100 percent score for a season premiere on Rotten Tomatoes and also inspired 2.4 million tweets, making it the show’s most-tweeted episode of all time, according to Twitter.

By comparison, the very first season of GOT averaged 3.3 million viewers including DVR, according to Nielsen. As you can see from the photos above, we caught the S7 opener last night. We’re still recovering.
