'Game of Thrones' Prequel Has Already Started Filming in Northern Ireland
If you’re still reeling from the arguably unsatisfying Game of Thrones finale, not all hope is lost.
A Game of Thrones prequel has begun filming in Northern Ireland, the Irish Post reported, so now’s the time to start concocting some new conspiracy theories.
Northern Ireland is one of the many locations that the hit HBO show has filmed over the years. Today, fans can go on tours of the various locations, including the real-life Winterfell castle, Castle Ward in Strangford, County Down, Northern Ireland. Though many of the original sets, production materials, props, and costumes are being gathered for an upcoming Game of Thrones tourist attraction, fans can still go to the many towns that the show was filmed in to feel the magic.
According to the Irish Post, much of the filming is taking place in various locations in County Down and County Fermanagh. Titanic Studios in Belfast, the Marble Arch Caves, Claddagh Glen have been spotted as film locations as well, Lonely Planet reported.
The new spin-off is currently untitled, though the speculative title is The Long Night. The prequel stars Naomi Watts and Miranda Richardson, and there’s not much information on what it will be about. According to CNBC, the story takes place between 5,000 and 10,000 years before the events of the original show. So, don’t expect an appearance from Jon Snow in this one.
According to a statement by HBO, the show “chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one thing is for sure: It’s not the story we think we know.”
As they say in the Iron Islands, “What is dead may never die.” That’s definitely true when it comes to our love of Game of Thrones.
