Gal Gadot Reveals How Princess Diana Inspired Her Performance as Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot's performance as Wonder Woman is iconic—and the actress recently revealed that her take on Diana Prince was actually inspired by Princess Diana.

During an appearance at the virtual Vanity Fair Cocktail Hour Live! event, Gadot explained that an aha moment about Wonder Woman came to her while she was watching a documentary about the late royal.

"I remember watching a documentary about Princess Diana and there was a part where they said she was full of compassion and always cared for the people and that was like, 'Ding, ding, ding,' that should be the Wonder Woman we have," Gadot said, according to People.

That insight became the key to the character for Gadot, who has played Diana Prince in two standalone movies as well as Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League.

"How can you connect to a goddess that's super strong and has it all and [is] super perfect?" Gadot explained. "I wanted to show her vulnerabilities and heart."

Gadot's Wonder Woman movies have touched and inspired millions of women and girls around the world—including Gadot herself. Earlier this year, the actress revealed that the opening sequence of Wonder Woman 1984, in which a young version of her character competes against the adult Amazons in an athletic competition, had her in tears.

"I can’t tell you about the moment in the movie that made me cry other than it happens at the very beginning," she said, according to MSN. "I’ve never experienced that before. I was watching and all of a sudden I wasn’t the actress, the producer, or anything on set. I was a little girl from a suburb in Israel watching this amazing character doing such incredible things. And I’m not an easy crier. I’m not the kind of woman who watches commercials and cries I just had such a strong reaction to this movie and it caught me off guard. Usually I save my crying for special occasions….like when I’m pregnant!"
