Furiosa Takes A Back Seat In Upcoming Mad Max Sequels

It looks as though Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa may not get much screen time in the ‘Mad Max’ sequels… as director George Miller hints at a far smaller role.

During an interview with Digital Spy, the 70-year-old Australian filmmaker revealed that Furiosa won’t be as prominent in the upcoming sequels… if she appears at all.

“I’m not sure, is the answer,” Miller said when asked whether Charlize Theron would return. “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”

This might come as a bit of a surprise to fans of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ – many of whom lauded Theron’s performance as the kick-ass female lead.

And when we recently spoke to George Miller, he seemed positive that we’d see more of Imperator Furiosa in the upcoming films.

“Yes, definitely,” he said. “A lot of the characters I want to come back.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be entirely out of character if Imperator Furiosa didn’t return in the ‘Mad Max’ sequels. After all, that tends to be Max’s shtick – getting caught up in people’s business as he merely tries to survive the wasteland.

And if you aren’t convinced, here’s what George Miller told us about the ‘Mad Max’ series:

“In their own way they’re always standalone,” he said. “It deals with the same world and obviously it’s the same characters, but they’re not a continuous story. They are episodes, if you like, in the lives of the wasteland and the characters.”

But what will the next chapter in ‘Mad Max’ be called? It looks as though rumours that it could be titled ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’ aren’t exactly on the money.

“That name came out, that was just a working title,“ he told Digital Spy. “Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays - so we have two [more movies]… I’m happy to say that there’s discussions about them right now, but I hope the next film I make is a very small without any special effects and not many stunts.”

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
