Friends wake up in Barcelona after boozy night out in Surrey

Most of us have had drunken nights out which got out of hand, but perhaps not so much as a pair of friends who found themselves waking up in Barcelona.

Tara Hammersley, 19, who studies Psychology at Nottingham Trent University, was on a night out with her best friend Jack Messer, also 19, last month when events took a surprising turn.

On their way home from a nightclub, the pair decided to get some food from the nearest McDonald’s branch, which just so happened to be in Gatwick Airport.

Jack, who works in retail, said: “We decided, as Tara was in need of some food, to head to Gatwick Airport for a cheeky McDonald’s.

“It’s only 15 minutes away from the club and it was the easiest place to go for food. But as soon as we saw the planes, we decided to check out SkyScanner.

“That’s when I decided to book our flight to Barcelona for a little spontaneous holiday.”

After checking in online for their flight at 5am, the pair made their way through airport security and got on the plane. They promptly fell asleep for the duration of the flight.

“When I woke up on the flight I had no idea where I was – my initial thought was I had died and was on my way to heaven.

“After asking Jack multiple times where we are, he finally remembered we were going to Barcelona.

“I just said, oh my god what have we done, and eventually laughed it off.”

Despite the somewhat spontaneous nature of their trip, the pair went on to spend two days in the Spanish city to enjoy the beach and nightlife.

“I have no idea how we made it through airport security and on to the plane but somehow it happened,” adds Tara.

“Thankfully Jack had his card so I had to use that for the whole trip – we also had no clothes apart from what we wore to the club that night.

“I had on a shiny, silver bodycon dress – not the best outfit to travel in.

“We had to buy some clothes and borrow some clothes off some friends we made at the hostel we were staying in.

“We decided to stay in Barcelona for a couple of days and try to make the most out of our drunken mistake.

“We spent most of the time chilling out on the beach and going out drinking at night.

“All in all we had a good holiday although I’m hoping that this doesn’t happen again – my mum has confiscated my passport since!”
