Four easy makeup hacks that actually work

A lifelong obsession with makeup has not made me an expert on its application.

Despite the fact that I make a modest living writing about it, I’m always learning something new about those little pots of eye shadow, the goop that gives my lashes a much needed boost and the flesh-toned liquid that makes people believe I have a doll-like complexion.

Really, the only thing that thrills me more than cute animal videos is learning of a new makeup hack. Admittedly, not all of them work (for me) and sometimes I simply just make a mess of it. You’ll never master a smoky eye without turning yourself into a panda at least once.

Hey, I’m still learning – but here are a few brilliant makeup hacks that actually work for me. Bonus: they’re all easy.

Hack: Red lipstick to cover undereye circles

The theory behind this hack is that red lipstick will neutralize the blue/purple-ish colour of dark undereye circles.

1. Start by applying the red lipstick lightly enough to cover your undereye circles. You can use a brush or your fingers – whatever is easiest for you.

2. Once you look like a complete lunatic, use your foundation and apply as you normally would. Be very careful around your eyes, as you don’t want to smear the lipstick. Try dabbing the foundation on with a beauty blender if you run into trouble.

Hack: Intensify eye shadow using white eye liner

Sometimes life calls for some head-turning eye makeup. For those nights out, here’s how to get the most out of your eye shadow with a little help from white eyeliner.

1. Apply white liner over the part of your eyelids that you’re going to put shadow on.

2. Apply your eye shadow over top and you’ll immediately notice how much more pigmented the colour looks.

Hack: The triangle method

There can never be enough ways to cover undereye circles. I’ve successfully covered zits and scars, but under eye circles remain the hardest imperfection to completely conceal. That’s why we’re including another makeup hack to cover those unsightly bags.

1. Apply concealer in the shape of an inverted triangle under your eyes. I tend to use foundation instead of concealer because it’s less cakey looking on my skin.

2. Use a beauty blender to seamlessly blend your concealer into your foundation.

Hack: Fake fuller lips with strategic lip liner

You don’t have to overdraw your lips a la Kylie Jenner to achieve a fuller pout. For a slightly more subtle approach, try this easy makeup hack.

1. Apply a lip liner that’s a slightly lighter shade than your lipstick to just the middle of your lips.

2. Apply lipstick as usual over top. You’ll notice a little extra oomph to your lip game.
