27 Feb – The boulder's still rolling for "Indiana Jones 5", though right now it has no director attached to it. That's because Steven Spielberg has decided to leave the director's chair.

For the first time ever, an instalment of the "Indiana Jones" franchise will not be helmed by Spielberg, who's directed all past four movies.

Variety reported that Spielberg's decision to step down was entirely his own. The director is hoping to pass the job to a new generation so they can bring their perspective to the story.

Spielberg will reportedly hand the directing reins to James Mangold, whose notable works include 2017's "Logan" and last year's "Ford v Ferrari". Mangold hasn't sealed the deal but he is in talks to take the job.

It's easy to see why Spielberg would agree to Mangold directing the long-running franchise, as the latter has a couple of Oscar nominations under him for the two abovementioned movies.

Despite leaving the directing post, Spielberg will remain on board as a hands-on producer.

He has been involved in the fifth instalment since it was announced in 2016 that he would be reuniting with star Harrison Ford, who will be reprising the titular professor of archaeology role.

The movie was originally scheduled for release in North American cinemas on 19 July 2019 but was later pushed to 10 July 2020.

It was once again delayed following screenwriter David Koepp's departure from the project, and replaced with Jonathan Kasdan, who wrote "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and is the son of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" writer Lawrence Kasdan.

If all goes well for "Indiana Jones 5", it will open in cinemas on 9 July 2021.
