Fleabag leads Primetime Emmys with four awards

Fleabag, Game of Thrones and Chernobyl were the big winners at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night (22Sep19).

Fleabag was the night's big winner, claiming four honours, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Game of Thrones added to its 10-trophy haul at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend (14-15Sep19) by picking up another two, including Outstanding Drama Series, while Chernobyl claimed three awards, including Outstanding Limited Series.

Records were broken with Peter Dinklage becoming the first star to land four honours in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category for Game of Thrones, Pose star Billy Porter became the first openly gay black man to win the Lead Actor Emmy, and Game of Thrones tied the record for most wins in the Best Drama category with Mad Men, The West Wing, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law.

Meanwhile, by winning the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series prize, Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge ended Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Veep record-breaking streak in the same category at six.

Waller-Bridge also picked up a trophy for writing Fleabag.

Emmys night was also about final reunions as the casts of Game of Thrones and Veep came together one last time onstage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Both shows ended earlier this year (19).
